This is a summary of college only using two pictures; expensive as hell.

That’s my Sociology “book”. In fact what it is is a piece of paper with codes written on it to allow me to access an electronic version of a book. I was told by my professor that I could not buy any other paperback version, or use another code, so I was left with no option other than buying a piece of paper for over $200. Best part about all this is my professor wrote the books; there’s something hilariously sadistic about that. So I pretty much doled out $200 for a current edition of an online textbook that is no different than an older, paperback edition of the same book for $5; yeah, I checked. My mistake for listening to my professor.

This is why we download.

Signal Boast

kinda late in the semester but good to know

Add to that list: https://www.boundless.com/
As someone who once worked in the textbook business, I can reassure you, it is a complete rip off. Textbook companies jack up prices for identical “new editions”, bookstores are not allowed to discount them or tell students about alternatives, and professors often don’t know or don’t care how much students have to spend. Lots of places offer textbook rentals, but that can be a trap too, unless you keep the book in pristine condition. Buyback programs can sometimes offer a partial return, but it’s rare to get more than 10% of the new price. Education is expensive enough already, why are we making access to information something that only the wealthy can afford? Fuck that.

Of course, the other side of that coin is that a lot of students (not all, but a lot) buy their books with their parents’ money and throw them in the trash after barely using them, without even trying to sell them anywhere. I have little sympathy for someone who complains about the price of their education when they have a $500 purse on their arm. It is sad that those who are offered the most opportunities in our culture are not those who work the hardest or want it the most, but those who can afford to buy their way into a privileged life.

What would happen if multiple people in a class told their professor that they couldn’t afford the book instead of blindly trudging to the bookstore to buy it? I think the last sentence sums up the point of these photos: they could have spent $5 if they had researched alternatives, but they didn’t. Your professor doesn’t want you to use the paper version of a book, don’t tell them. Colleges are businesses that exist to make money. They will try to rip you off whenever they can, and all students should know that.

thegoldeneternity:

Eastern Emerald Elysia

Elysia chlorotica is a “solar-powered” marine sea slug that sequesters and retains photosynthetically active chloroplasts from the algae it eats and, remarkably, has incorporated algal genes into its own genetic code. It is emerald green in color often with small red or white markings, has a slender shape typical of members of its genus, and parapodia (lateral “wings”) that fold over its body in life. This sea slug is unique among animals to possess photosynthesis-specific genes and is an extraordinary example of symbiosis between an alga and mollusc as well as a genetic chimera of these two organisms.

毬藻 its alive! this marimo is about 6 years old.

The bottom of Lake Akan in Hokkaido Japan is inhabited by miraculously spherical rare algae called “marimo.” In 1921 they were declared a “Japanese Natural Treasure” and the public’s interest in Marimo was stirred. Many Japanese have Marimo as pets in their homes and offices. They are beautifully soft and smooth like velvet and are very easy to care for.

Marimo are happiest when they are in filtered water.
Just change their water once a week.

Marimo like baths!
Sometimes you will see cloudy bits of filth clinging to the Marimo. Simply run the marimo under the kitchen sink and he will be clean and very thankful.

Marimo can thrive wonderfully in artificial light but they do NOT like direct sun light.
When you receive your Marimo it will probably float for a while on the surface, this is the Marimo’s natural way of getting lots of light and then once its had enough he will float down to the bottom.

In the waters of lake Akan the Marimo bounce around in the lakes current and the current helps them grow into their nice spherical shape so they like to be poked, and moved around. This also helps them get even lighting. its perfectly safe to hold Marimo. Marimo are great pets for children.

Marimo grow 5mm a year and live to be over 100!

Look no further, the Marimo i care for are the greenest and healthiest.
no chemicals are used in their aquarium.

In the nineteenth century, these sentiments were so respectable that surviving relatives often published them in elegies…. [In the 1920s] people’s interpretation of physical contact became extraordinarily ‘privatized and sexualized,’ so that all types of touching, kissing, and holding were seen as sexual foreplay rather than accepted as ordinary means of communication that carried different meanings in different contexts… It is not that homosexuality was acceptable before; but now a wider range of behavior opened a person up to being branded as a homosexual… The romantic friendships that had existed among many unmarried men in the nineteenth century were no longer compatible with heterosexual identity.”

- Stephanie Coontz (via glitterencrustedbunghole)

peggys-feet:
